Huvafen Fushi has to be the most outstanding and luxurious resort that we have ever visited. After being greeted by your Thakuru (personal butler) on arrival in Male, take a brief skim across the turquoise Ocean to the most sensual escape into paradise. Located in the North Male Atoll, Per Aquum have recently transformed this small island into a sanctuary of sandy lanes, shallow lagoons, and state of the art bungalows to provide an experience beyond any guest's wildest dreams.
Despite their dedication to preserving the island's natural beauty, the Maldivian people warmly welcome all guests and present a very relaxed atmosphere, accompanied by impeccable service. A no- shoes policy is suggested and sand runs between your toes by day and night as you head for the reef to snorkle, feed the Manta at sunset or dine by candlelight on the sea front.
Privacy and spaciousness prevail despite the 43 bungalows, and the minute attention to detail is astonishing. Many guests spend time in their bungalows and sometimes the only sign of life is the occasional housekeeping buggie and the multi-coloured flippers which hang outside each bungalow. Inside, minimilistic design meets technology, allowing your chosen sounds and lighting to flow from room to room.
Huvafen Fushi was primarily designed for total relaxation, but the many activities provide ample entertainment for a 7+ night stay. Sample snorkelling, diving in the reef and at neighbouring islands, an optic fibre lit infinity pool, a yoga pavilion, game fishing or a fully equipped gym may be patronised by the active.
Those seeking an indolent holiday may opt for a treatment in the world's first underwater spa, stroll the 3 km of perimeter coral-sand coastline, feel light-headed in the outdoor water flotation pool "Lonu Veyo" or visit The Lair, where you can lounge on the gigantic cushions with your choice from an extensive library, or with your favourite movie. Day beds are plentiful around the island in every shape and size imaginable but beware of the gigantic sun dish, supremely comfortable though they are for the 'book worm', climbing out is something else!
Famed for their aquum spas, Huvafen Fushi is no exception - cutting edge spa technology and treatments from all corners of the world. The soul of the spa draws upon the restorative qualities of water. However, the real gem is the 180 degree aquarium wall . The feeling is quite spiritual, but add to this a floodlit backdrop and a setting for dinner a deux, it is truely amazing. One romantic guest filled the room with white roses and proposed to his beloved in this magical setting.
Cool linen clothing and bare feet are the order of the day, so leave your stilettos at home and enjoy the sandy floors running through the restaurants.
The 3 head chefs and sommelier excelled themselves with their variety of Eastern, seafood, spa and raw cuisine and the cellar would be admired by any discerning winebuff.
Choose between the beach or ocean bungalows or if you have sea legs, set sail around the islands on board the cruiser Symphony watching the ocean`s vibrant sealife. As I lazed on my lagoon deck, I spotted a seabird perched on the thatched roof. In a single movement he swooped down, captured his prey and continued his flight with a huge parafish. Life is full of surprises at Huvafen Fushi.

- The magical sensation of dining upon the twinkling pool as the water kisses your toes.
- Indulge in Quintessential Aquum comprising a ritual of yoga, meditation, Indian head massage and a signature Asian blend body massage as mantas, baby shark and your very own "nemo" catch a glimpse.

- Initially, I found the array of remote control buttons a little perplexing but soon got the hang of it.
- Unless you are a committed sun worshipper more than 7 nights here may make you a little twitchy. Combine the trip with holiday to Sri Lanka (just one hour flight) for culture and activities.
- I definitely gained a few pounds in weight but the experience was highly memorable
