A light, modern villa on one of Sri Lanka's most pretty fishing bays. Colourful fish swim within the protected reef of coral and crustaceans which provides a snorkellers' paradise, but also territory for the intriguing stilt fishermen, who jealously guard their posts passed down through families. The fish are so beautiful and plentiful that the cook apparently calls out your order to the surrounding sea.
Picture windows facing the ocean give an uninterrupted view of magnificent sunsets from your armchair- or four poster bed. The large sitting room is charmingly furnished with antique jackwood pieces, and teak doors and floors lead from the living areas onto the verandah. The floor here is constructed from old monastery wood.
The housekeeper and cook will indulge your every whim and are fantastic with children, should you want a quiet moment.
Boogie boards, sandcastles, 35x15ft pool and a 'writers nook' to draft that promised novel, will keep families entertained. The landscaped gardens are enclosed by a perimeter wall ensuring privacy, and safety for younger children.
The real hghlight for the children is the nightly and morning hatch and release of baby turtles just outside the villa. The villa can accommodate up to 6 adults, but is equally cosy for a couple seeking quiet in the tranquil tropics.
Koggala Lake has a temple, bird sanctuary and prawn farm, all of which may be visited by river boat.
Responsible Tourism:
The profits of Southpoint villa since its launch 3 years ago have been put towards the development of an education centre in the village. It is self funding and teaches the local community English language, art, sewing and computer skills. Recent results have led to many O and A'level passes at English and this year numerous grade A's. If guests would like to visit or take part as a teacher, they are welcome . As teacher of a one-off class, you need only to advise BSL in advance and the college will advertise the class. Attendance is guaranteed but remember the level of English and keep it informative but simple to understand.
