This is the closest you will find to Sandals/18-30 on the southwest coast. Wünderbar is a vibrant and sociable guesthouse built on family land on the outskirts of an original coconut plantation. Recently renovated by Channa, the owner, its 6 rooms have been equipped to an excellent standard. Set away from the Galle Road the unfortunate dowdy entrance and track leads you to the beachside and a bunch of welcoming ‘Animators’ (hosts). Whatever the time, music is the food of life here. Reggae, calypso, bongos or dance music is the inspiration in the restaurant in the garden, cabanas or in the air-conditioned disco. Chan’s friends (your hosts) will have you dancing, singing, chatting or on tours but it`s all good fun. No pressure but it`s infectious. Wünderbar is also home to lots of four legged friends – turtles. The professionally run turtle hatchery can be visited but it is not very interactive. Despite the music, the rooms are surprisingly quiet, even the early morning trains at the end of the coconut garden will not wake you (after the 1st night that is, if you’re a light sleeper). Life and facilities are very ‘laid-back’ here but bustling with locals and there is always a tuk-tuk at hand. The in-house jewellery shop is unusually placed, very expensive and obscures the sea view. Take a minute’s stroll over the railway to reach 30mtres of woodland before the wide sandy beach. This is the only piece of protected beach woodland on the island left undisturbed and makes for a peaceful stroll by the sunset, a real delight and free of touts. Chan has an organised and well-priced team of tour guides and vans if you hanker after 2-3 days away. He also hosts fantastic concerts on the beach from time to time, which attract 1000’s - old and young feel comfortable dancing. Otherwise you can dance the night away at the only disco in Bentota. It`s air-conditioned and the DJ won’t stop until you go home. Noise isn’t a problem as it’s soundproofed.
