Things To Do & Local Tips

• Hikaduwa's great surf from Nov to April.  Experienced surfers can surf throughout the year but the undertow can be strong in parts.
   
• Similarly the reef offers great snorkelling but tourists have damaged some of the coral.
   
• Hikkaduwa has dive centres galore so bargain hard. Diving season is Nov- April.
   
• Head 10 mins South to historic Galle where you can meander through the Fort, visit museums and generally enjoy the buzz of  the Fort's comopolitan bars, cafe's and shops.
   
• The Galle ramparts are best walked at sunset around 5.30-6pm.
   
• Turtle sanctuaries along the coast will invite you to view the eggs and baby turtles.
   The stilt fisherman are out between 9-11am and 4-6pm around the Koggala area, 20 mins away.
   
• Head North along the coastal road to Ambalangoda to discover the many crafts of the villages including, puppetry, mask painting, antiques and wood carving.
   
• River boat safaris to see river fish, local villagers and crocodiles can be done on the Madu ganga ( 30 mins away)
• Sign up for a Mini- Course on subjects like Sri Lankan cooking, jaggery making, mask making etc.

Further afield:

• A day trip would allow you to visit Uda walawe for an elephant jeep safari or you may 'catch' leopards at Yala.  Yala is really best done with an overnight stay. Uda walawe is a 3hour drive so head out in the early morning.
