Bars & Restaurants

There are many local restaurants for Rice & Curry with little to choose from, so opt for the most convenient. For a wonderful evening meal, try :

King Coconut, 11 Porutota Road, Negombo
On the beach, great value snacks and main dishes. Seafood and Stone baked Pizza specialities.

The Pearl (see above)
Casual beach side restaurant. The Sesame Roasted prawns are amazing. Friendly and casual with late night drinking

Pri Kin Restaurant, 10 Porutota Road
Chinese, local and western. Very cheap and cheerful.

Fine Dining can only be found in the large 5star hotels within the ala Carte restaurant. The best is Browns Beach Hotel but it may be quiet as most hotel guests opt for the all-inclusive buffet.

Little by way of entertainment with the exception of the occasional beach party, or live calypso music at beach restaurants. The social scene is largely amongst tourists within the many bars and restaurants

Many of the clothing manufacturers have factories in this region but they have no official factory shop. If you speak to the hotel managers (and be careful you are not taken on a wild goose chase by the locals) they will identify the kind of stock in the factories and if the supervisor is willing to sell rejects or odd lines.

The Negombo fish and flower market is an exciting adeventure but you will need to be there at 6am so arrange a Tuk Tuk in advance through your hotel manager or a friendly Tuk Tuk driver.

Getting About

A lot of Negombo can be done on foot as you meander through the Dutch quarters, canal street and coastal Road. Bicycles can be hired in many shops and hotels for about Rs 150 / day but don’t expect top of the range models.

Tuk Tuk’s are in abundance and you a trip around the local villages to see the farmers at work is a great way to hide from the mid day sun. Round trips within 1-4 km should be no more than Rs250.

Regular buses come in from Colombo to Lewis Place or Porutota road. No 8 and 270 leave every 15mins or opt for a comfortable air conditioned private bus for just Rs20 extra. The journey is about 45mins and costs Rs30. There will be long queues at peak time and weekends.

Private buses will also take you to Kandy but you will need to enquire at the bus station as private bus companies come and go regularly. Journey takes 3 hours and costs about Rs100.

Trains into Colombo are only 3rd class and will be extremely crowded.
