The house retains its colonial charm, with a central courtyard, sweeping Jackwood staircase, Dutch antiques and individually designed rooms, many featuring elegant four-poster beds. Life here moves at a slower pace. Spend the afternoon by the infinity pool, wander through the gardens, enjoy afternoon tea on the verandah or savour fresh, locally inspired cuisine in the intimate dining room. The Adigar’s Manor is also perfectly placed for discovering Kandy and its cultural treasures, including the Temple of the Tooth and the Royal Botanic Gardens, with hiking and other experiences nearby. Luxurious bathrooms with tub and shower, twin wash basins. Garden suite an Ultra deluxe double room with arched doors opening out from the large living area onto the garden. The bedroom features a low king size bed, and a wonderfully romantic bathroom has a tiled, octagonal 2 person bath and massage area. Deluxe Rooms – Red Admiral and Cornelian deluxe double rooms on the upper floor overlooking a large courtyard. These rooms open onto a private verandah complete with chaise longue to lie back and enjoy the jungle views and pepper trees. Deluxe Rooms – Sunbeam and Lime Butterfly one deluxe double and one twin room. The twin room has a lovely bathroom with double basin, and a vintage cast iron bath and shower. The windows overlook the large internal courtyard. The double room overlooks the garden, otherwise is similar to the twin room. Deluxe Room – Monkey Puzzle our smallest room. The bathroom has a shower and a single basin. This bedroom is on the lower level of the courtyard and has low ceilings. As it adjoins the Garden suite the combination makes a delightful family suite for teenage children. Dining Dining at The Adigar’s Manor is more like staying with friends and attending a dinner party each night, while breakfast is a background to a discussion of events of night before. Tables are arranged informally around the courtyard for al fresco evenings. Larger groups may prefer to eat at the grand dining table. Meals are prepared by newly arrived and first class chef, who shops daily for local ingredients. We dined on watercress soup and home made bread. Thai grilled chicken on saffron rice followed and to finish we devoured a mouthwatering caramalised pecan creme brulee. Wine was plentiful with an excellent selection of house wines. Many guests are impatient to begin sightseeing but should not leave before the platter of tropical fruits and array of breads and local jams. Cooked breakfasts are standard if that is your preference. Those guests with more time relaxed around the pool and chef rusttled up a wonderful tuna salad for lunch. Things to do & local tips The estate The estate is a wonderful place to relax, unwind and enjoy the local fresh air and wildlife. The spice gardens can be explored and admired. Pool experience Take a dip in the pool at the foot of the garden Peradeniya Botanical Gardens Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is also west of the city and has a plethora of tropical plants and a rare orchid house. Those with green fingers and others will enjoy this pretty walk Spice gardens Spice gardens surround the mid country and are worth a visit but do expect to enjoy a cup of tea and pass a few coins for a pack of your favourite spice or ayurvedic treatment. Pinnewala Elephant orphange Pinnewala Elephant orphange is just 40 minutes west of the city, with three feeding and bath times to be enjoyed. Golf and cricket enthusiasts Golf and cricket enthusiasts will both enjoy this city. The Victoria Golf course is to the east and has magnificent views of the Victoria Lake. The doors open onto the flood – lit grassy courtyard, and the relecting pools sparkle under the stars. The frangipani trees cast dancing shadows as they are ruffled by the sea breezes. The cuisine is Asian and Mediterranean with an empahasis on the local seafood. We could not experience the fine cuisine of the master chef as we visited the hotel pre-opening, however the menu looks mouth watering. View some of the choices: Breakfast: delicious fresh juices, yoghurts, cereals, eggs, pancakes or a huge English style platter. Lunch and Dinner: spiced chicken salad, slow roasted duck with coconut and ginger, stir fried beef, many fish dishes including king prawns, yellow fin tuna and locally caught lobster. Deserts sound divine: pineapple crumble with sorbet, tropical fruit salad with toasted coconut, lemon, vanilla and yoghurt panacotta with passion fruit coulis. Guests tend to dine and retire early after days in the sun and the adjacent lounge bar has a welcoming ambience for a night cap. Panoramic views of the resort accompany the best conversation and the many board games keep some guests ticking way beyond 11pm !! Pre dinner cocktails at sun down and light lunches are also served in the bar. The terrace beside the pool provides another popular venue for alfresco diners. Simple lunches, king coconut and exotic fruit are served throughout the day. In the evening guests can dine on ante pasta and home-style dishes whilst star-gazing on the daybeds and bolsters. The local village The local village of Wella Wathuara provides a mixture of jungle, village life and beach strolls, where you will enjoy diverse wildlife and many a friendly smile. It is not recommended that you take walks after sundown as a few locals within poor JVP communities may take advantage of the situation. Located Located about 35 minutes north of Tangalle is Mulgirigalla monastic site on an isolated 210m high rock, rising straight out of the forest. The ola-leaf scripts of the 19th century were discovered here and a translation can be seen. At the foot of the temple are the monks’ quarters and a set of steep steps leading to cave temples and images of Buddha murals. Bundala National Park Just over an hour away is Bundala National Park, home to many endemic birds and hundreds of flamingos. The surrounding marshland also hosts crocodiles and elephants. Jeep and boat safaris are offered where you might spot grey langur monkeys cavorting in the overhanging trees, or deer and jackal hiding in the scrub jungle. Neighboring Hambantota was badly hit by the 2004 Tsunami but the wildlife remain safe.
